Laxmana was the son of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya and his youngest queen, Sumitra. Shatrughna was his twin brother. He was extremely attached to his eldest brother Rama (born to the Kausalya, the eldest wife of the king). When Rama had to renounce the throne and go into exile into the forest accompanied by his wife Sita, due to his great attachment to his brother, Laxmana accompanied them.
In the forest, Sita was abducted by the demon king Ravana. With the help of Sugreeva, the king of the monkeys, Rama and Laxmana invaded Lanka, the kingdom of Ravana. Laxmana played a major role in the ensuing war. He slew Indrajit, the formidable son of Ravana, one of the bulwarks of the Ravana's army.
Laxmana's wife is Urmila, of the royal house of Mithila.
