Devaki was the sister of Kamsa. She had many suitors for her hand. Sini, a Yadava warrior, defeated Somadatta and claimed her hand for his friend Vasudeva. When it was prophesized that the eigth child of Devaki and Vasudeva would be the slayer of Kamsa, he imprisoned his sister and husband, putting to death every child born to them.
With the help of divine intervention, Vasudeva exchanged his eigth son Krishna with the daughter of Nanda, another Yadava chieftain. Thus Krishna was brought up by his foster parents Nanda and Yashoda.
