The Aditya Hridayam (आदित्य हृदयम्) is a hymn praising Surya (the sun). It is a part of the epic Ramayana. It comes in the 107th chapter of the Yudha-Kaanda (Book of War).
Rama is exhausted and despondent, overcome by doubt of his prowess on the battlefield, during his battle with the demon king Ravana. The sage Agastya comes to him and advises him to pray to the sun God (Rama belongs to the Sun dynasty) to grant him strength and victory. The prayer suggested by Agastya is the Aditya Hridayam.
ततो युद्धपरिश्रान्तं समरे चिन्तया स्थितम्
रावणं चाग्रतो दृष्ट्वा युद्धाय समुपस्थितम्
In the middle of the war, Rama was despondent, worried about the way the war was going. He beheld the Asura King Ravana waiting to face him in battle.
दैवतैश्च समागम्य द्रष्टुमभ्यागतो रणम्
Along with the Gods, the divine sage Agastya witnessed the predicament of Rama. He addressed the warrior thus:
राम राम महाबाहो शृणु गुह्यं सनातनम्
येन सर्वानरीन्वत्स समरे विजयिष्यसि
O mighty-armed Rama, listen to this invocation that will help you triumph over all enemies, emerge victorious in war.
आदित्यहृदयं पुण्यं सर्वशत्रुविनाशनम्
जयावहं जपेन्नित्यं अक्ष्य्यं परमं शिवम्
This holy prayer to Surya (the sun God) is sacred, foe-destroying, victory-giving. If you chant it daily, it shall lead you to eternal bliss.
It confers all blessings, destroys all sins, dispels worries and increases your lifespan.
रश्मिमंतं समुद्यन्तं देवासुरनमस्कृतम्
पूजयस्व विवस्वन्तं भास्करं भुवनेश्वरम्
Worship him, whose attributes are the rays when he has arisenn, one who is revered by the Devas and the Asura's alike, who is worthy of worship, the Lord of the Universe and the giver of light.
सर्वदेवात्मको ह्येष तेजस्वी रश्मिभावनः
एष देवासुरगणाँल्लोकां पाति गभस्तिभिः
He represents all deities, he is brilliant and world-sustaining. He is the nourishing force for all worlds, and for both the Devas and the Asuras.
एष ब्रह्मा च विष्णुश्च शिवः स्कन्दः प्रजापतिः
महेन्द्रो धनदः कालो यमः सोमोह्यपां पतिः
He is verily Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Skanda, Prajapati. He is Mahendra (Indra?), Kubera, Kala (Yama), Soma (Chandra), and Varuna.
पितरो वसवः साध्या ह्यश्विनौ मरुतो मनुः
वायुर्वह्निः प्रजाप्राण ऋतुकर्ता प्रभाकरः
He is the Pitris, the Vasus, the Sadhyas, the twin Ashwinis, the Maruts and the Manus. He is verily Vayu, Agni and Prana (the life force), He is the cause of the seasons, the source of all energy and light.
आदित्यः सविता सूर्यः खगः पूषा गभस्तिमान्
सुवर्णसदृशो भानुर्हिरण्यरेता दिवाकरः
The son of Aditi, he is the creator, the inspiration for all movement, traversing the skies. He sustains, illuminates all directions and the golden tinted maker of the day.
हरिदश्वः सहस्रार्चिः सप्तसप्तिर्मरीचिमान्
तिमिरोन्मथनः शंभुस्त्वष्टा मार्ताण्ड अंशुमान्
He is present everywhere, his countless rays reaching all places. He is the force behind the seven senses, the destroyer of darkness. He bestows happiness and wealth, he infuses life and removes misfortunes.
हिरण्यगर्भः शिशिरस्तपनो भास्करो रविः
अग्निगर्भोऽदितेः पुत्रः शङ्खः शिशिरनाशनः
He is the primordial golden-egg, from which the Trinity was born. He ushers in the day. He emerged from the fiery womb of Aditi, and is her son. He dispels both darkness and ignorance.
घनवृष्टिरपां मित्रो विन्ध्यवीथीप्लवङ्गमः
The Lord of the sky, dispeller of darkness, he has perfect knowledge of the Rig, Yajur and Sama Vedas. He is the friend of Varuna and the maker of rain. He crosses the Vindhya mountain range.
आतपी मण्डली मृत्युः पिङ्गलः सर्वतापनः
कविर्विश्वो महातेजाः रक्तः सर्वभवोद्भवः
He is a yellow colored disk, and is death himself. Of great brilliance, he is the destructive force, and provides the energy for the movement of the worlds.
तेजसामपि तेजस्वी द्वादशात्मन्नमोऽस्तु ते
He rules the planets and stars. Everything originates from him and he is the lusture of the celestials. I worship him who is manifest in all the twelve aspects of the Sun.
नमः पूर्वाय गिरये पश्चिमायाद्रये नमः
ज्योतिर्गणानां पतये दिनाधिपतये नमः
I bow to the eastern mountain, and to the western mountain. I salute the Lord of the constellations, the ruler of the day.
जयाय जयभद्राय हर्यश्वाय नमो नमः
नमो नमः सहस्रांशो आदित्याय नमो नमः
I humbly salute him who confers victory to his worshipers. I bow before him who has a thousand rays, the son of Aditi.
नमः उग्राय वीराय सारङ्गाय नमो नमः
नमः पद्मप्रबोधाय मार्ताण्डाय नमो नमः
I salute the terrible one, the brave, one who moves so fast. I worship him who causes the lotus to bloom, who is fierce and Omnipotent.
भास्वते सर्वभक्षय रौद्राय वपुषे नमः
I salute the Lord of Brahma, Achuyta (Vishnu), the radiant Sun. I salute him who illuminates, and at the same time, like Rudra, devours all.
तमोघ्नाय हिमघ्नाय शत्रुघ्नायामितात्मने
कृतघ्नघ्नाय देवाय ज्योतिषां पतये नमः
I worship the ethereal Atman, who drives away darkness and fear, who also destroys enemies. He annihilate the ingrates, I worship him who Lords over the celestial bodies.
तप्तचामीकराभाय वह्नये विश्वकर्मणे
नमस्तमोऽभिनिघ्नाय रुचये लोकसाक्षिणे
I bow before him who shines like molten gold, the fire of knowledge, Vishwakarma, destroyer of darkness. He who is the Universal witness, him I salute.
नाशयत्येष वै भूतं तदेव सृजति प्रभुः
पायत्येष तपत्येष वर्षत्येष गभस्तिभिः
I pray to him who destroys and creates again. I pray to him who consumes the water with his rays, his heat and gives them back as rain!
एष सुप्तेषु जागर्ति भूतेषु परिनिष्ठितः
एष एवाग्निहोत्रं च फलं चैवाग्निहोत्रिणाम्
I bow to him who has his abode in the heart of all living things. He is awake while they sleep. He is the sacrificial fire and also the fruit of the sacrifice.
वेदाश्च क्रतवश्चैव क्रतूनां फलमेव च
यानि कृत्यानि लोकेषु सर्व एष रविः प्रभुः
He is the Vedas and the creator of all action. He is all the sacrifices and the fruits obtained by performing them.
एनमापत्सु कृच्छ्रेषु कान्तारेषु भयेषु च
कीर्तयन् पुरुषः कश्चिन्नावसीदति राघव
O Scion of the Raghu dynasty, one who studies this hymn will not lose heart and shall be free from fear, even in times of danger or distress.
पूजयस्वैनमेकाग्रो देवदेवं जगत्पतिम्
एतत् त्रिगुणितं जप्त्वा युद्धेषु विजयिष्यसि
Worship this God of Gods and the universe with single-minded devotion. You will certainly win this battle if you chant this Hymn.
अस्मिन्क्शणे महाबाहो रावणं त्वं वधिष्यसि
एवमुक्त्वा तदाऽगस्त्यो जगाम च यथागतम्
O Mighty warrior, In this very instant shall you destroy Ravana. After giving this advice, the sage Agastya returned the same way he had appeared (suddenly).
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महातेजा नष्टशोकोऽभवत्तदा
धारयामास सुप्रीतो राघवः प्रयतात्मवान्
The illustrious one became free from worry after listening to the sage. He grew braver and was suffused with energy.
आदित्यं प्रेक्श्य जप्त्वा तु परं हर्षमवाप्तवां
त्रिराचम्य शुचिर्भूत्वा धनुरादाय वीर्यवान्
He gazed at the sun with devotion and recited this hymn thrice. He purified himself by sipping water thrice and took up his bow in his mighty arms.
रावणं प्रेक्श्य हृष्टात्मा युद्धाय समुपागमत्
सर्व यत्नेन महता वधे तस्य धृतोऽभवत्
As he beheld Ravana approaching the battlefield, he redoubled his efforts and resolved to destroy the demon.
अथ रविरवदन्निरीक्श्य रामं
मुदितमनाः परमं प्रहृष्यमाणः
See that the destruction of the night-King (Ravana) was approaching, the Sun-god, who stood at the center of the assembly of the Gods, exclaimed "Hurry up" with great delight.
